About Fitness Testing:
Whether you are a personal trainer, gym teacher, coach,
physical therapist, or athlete, and are interested in knowing more
about movement and human performance, this site can assist you to
confirm that good decisions are being made to better the health,
employ safety, enhance enjoyment, and facilitate optimal performance
for your athletes.
Making good and effective decisions depends
on first obtaining relevant information. This is where testing and
measurement become appropriate. Testing is using instruments and
tools to make a measurement. The tool may be mechanical, like a
treadmill or a measuring tape. The tests may be written, oral, physiological
or psychological. Measurement is the act of assessing the data.
Evaluation is an interpretation of the testing data and determining
its appropriateness and level of development specific to a particular
sport or activity.
For example, an athlete may have a low level
of cardiovascular endurance. That may or may not be good, or relevant,
depending on the sport that athlete wishes to try out for. Obviously
if the athlete wants to be a cross-country runner, much work is
needed for the athlete to be competitive. But, if the athlete wants
to be a shot putter, cardiovascular endurance isn’t relevant
to this activity, therefore it would not be in his conditioning
program.
Reliable testing, accurate measurement, and
proper evaluation are central to the field of human performance.
When determining a fitness conditioning program for a particular
sport or activity, and in determining a competition strategy within
that sport or activity, to make accurate decisions a coach must
have valuable and specific information about each individual athlete
relevant to the demands of their athlete’s particular sport.
